Every alga is not harmful to the ecosystem. On the contrary, the algae are also prerequisite for a life in the water.

Nowadays it is easy to become to the conclusion that algae are only disadvantageous sign of eutrophication. However, the algae partake in the vital base production in the aquatic ecosystems.

Algae have many functions

If the vegetal plankton would not exist, the zooplankton did not have nutriment. This would reflect to the fish population, for the food nets and chains are all connected to the base production.

Globally the algae are important oxygen producers. In addition, algae bind CO2 missions when they assimilate. The ability to absorb CO2 has a positive impact on the global warming.

The specific algae are used as nourishment and fertilizer in plantations. Algae are also used in cosmetics and in production of medicament and additives.

Bloomings

Blooms are a natural part of the algae life cycle. In spring time, for example, the water is rich with nutriments which are due to the decomposition and melt water transportation. Nutriments, together with the sunlight, are inflicting the algae blooming. Also in summer and autumn there can be blooming in the water, although normally they are not continuous for the zooplankton use algae as nutriment.
